1. General information
This subject aims to systematically deepen in the problems of Ethics, both from the point of view of its formulation throughout the history of philosophy, and in its current treatment. The subject aims to combine the study of fundamental problems and texts with topics of applied ethics and/or Bioethics. These approaches and objectives are aligned with the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): Goal 4: Quality education; Goal 5: Gender equality; Goal 10: Reduction of inequalities; Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities; Goal 12: Responsible Production and Consumption; Goal 13: Climate Action; Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
2. Learning results
The student, in order to pass this subject, must demonstrate the following results... Be able to recognize the theoretical models in which the theses maintained by the different authors are framed and to formulate with precision their differences or their antagonisms and the arguments in favour or against such theses. Be able to briefly recognize the main theories and data provided by the human and social sciences and which are the subject of debates. Be able to identify and accurately formulate philosophical problems of anthropology, such as freedom, personal identity in relation to cultural identities , temporality and others relating them to other fields of philosophical reflection. Be able to recognize the main methods and contributions that shape culture in its different historical stages. Be able to analyse in a comparative way the diverse cultural manifestations. Be able to understand the contemporary world from a theoretical perspective. Be able to work autonomously and organize the work by making methodological decisions. Be able to plan work in achievable time sequences. Be able of orienting himself in the world of ideas and in the practical world, with autonomy and independence of judgment.
3. Syllabus
0] Introduction: Fundamental Ethics, Practical Ethics, Bioethics.
[1] Ethics and bioethics of death.
[2] Animal ethics and environmental ethics.
[3] Prostitution and surrogacy.
[4] The problem of evil.
4. Academic activities
The subject is based on the acquisition of contents taught in the theoretical classes, but also on the work of reading, commentary and analysis of texts carried out autonomously by the students. Occasionally, seminar or text commentary sessions will be held in class with presentations by the students. The program offered to the student to help them achieve the expected results includes the following activities Theoretical classes. Practical classes. Work and personal study. Assessment tests or activities.
5. Assessment system
First call: Global assessment test.
Final exam and delivery of a monographic work previously agreed with the teacher. 70% of the final grade will correspond to exam questions on the content of the lectures and the required reading texts. 30% of the final grade will correspond to a short research paper (approx. 15 pages) on a topic of the subject, based on the proposed books or readings.
CRITERIA FOR THE ASSESSMENT TEST The overall test will especially assess (1) the knowledge of the subject´s topics , (2) the ability of written expression (without spelling mistakes) and linguistic maturity, (3) the ability to synthesize and present the information in an orderly manner , (4) the ability of critical reflection on the subject´s topics.
Second call: Global assessment test identical to the previous one.
